Socket weld flanges have a big socket in which a pipe is inserted and the pipe is secured by a fillet weld located on the outside of the flange hub. This type of Socket Flange is that it is not considered an integrity joint because the weld is hard to prove and socket weld flanges are suitable for lower to medium classes. Due to their low integrity and inappropriateness for use at high pressures, socket weld flanges nearly always have flat or some raised faces.
Insert the pipe in the socket flange, until the bottom touches the shoulder area, and do fillet welding and create an expansion gap between the flange & the pipes.
The socket weld flange was used due to dodge cracking defects caused by thermal stress in heating processes and it became a standard claim for all types of material.
This sock welded construction removes internal pockets while avoiding warp of welding heat & damage to the flange face produced by weld spatter. PVC flange sockets are designed for small nominal pipe sizes and are common for small pipe sizes. The mechanical strength of the socket flange is very much similar to that of a socket weld rf flange, but it may use 2 welds. The gap allows thermal expansion due to welding & reduces the possibility that the weld will crack. In repetition, this means that the pipe should be completely inserted into the flange, then withdrawn by the desired amount.

Smooth bore conditions can be attained very easily without bevelling and, refacing the socket weld flange would be mandatory with flanges. So, the internal welded flange is prevalent in chemical process piping.
